Great Dane Trailers have been around since the 1900′s. The company was originally called the Savannah Blowpipe Company and started by building over-the-road freight hauling trailers. William Lowndes was hired for his expertise in trailer building and was brought in from from Greenville, South Carolina to help SBC manufacturer flatbed trailers. Mr. Lowndes built trailers in Greenville and had been calling them by the name of “Great Dane” since Great Danes are known for their strength and stamina so the name stuck.
The new trailers were designed to be lightweight to abide by highway weight laws. The trailers were made of high tensile steel and became very popular in 1938. In the early forties they started building refrigerated trailers and called them the Great Dane Reefer. In 1950′s they started building van trailers out of light aluminum. This is when they decided to phase out structural steel. Great Dane then moved into the piggyback and container trailer market and started to buy up companies to start manufacturing their own platform trailers. The began manufacturing trailers in Brazil and before long Great Dane trailers were recognized by their brand and logo of the Great Dane Dog. In 1996 Great Dane merged with Pines Trailer to form Great Dane Limited Partnership and become the worlds largest trailer company.
If you have any of the following conditions ply or belt material exposed, tread separation, sidewall separation, audible air leak, cut or exposed ply or belt material any type of flat tire or even dolly tire tread depth less than 2/32-in then give us a call you should replace your tire according to the CSA there are new rules provided by the FMCSA that trailers need to meet to be on the road safely.
Pre-trip inspections should always be done to identify any of these issues. One of the leading violations that carries a serenity rating is for tires that are underinflated based on the load. Some of the newer Great Dane Trailers have technology that combats this problem such as tire pressure monitoring and automatic inflation systems. These systems will continually monitor and adjust tire pressure by inflating or deflating tires based on the external environmental conditions as well as tire balancing which will extend the life of your tires.
The tire pressure monitoring systems draw air from the trailer air supply to supply the tires with the appropriate amount of tire pressure. These systems measure temperature and adjust the tires according to the temperature and will help improve tire life and safety. These same systems will alert the driver if there there is an issue with any of the tires. Having the correct tire pressure will not only improve the life of your tire but will also improve fuel economy.
